How to become a cop
If you want to know how to be a cop, you can congratulate yourself for making a good overall decision. Police officers are generally well-paid, have great benefits and have a good retirement plan set aside for them at the end of what would eventually become a long and illustrious career. That being said, being a police officer is not necessarily an easy thing to do and that is why people that get to that plateau are so well-rewarded.
Find out where you want to go and go there
If there is an easy way to describe the path to learning how to be a cop, this would definitely be it. The first thing you need to do is figure out where you want to go. Most people, depending on where they live, will have three choices amongst applications: city, state and federal. Each level of government has its own police force and the type of work that you want to do as a cop will contribute to which level you apply for. City cops work locally on all kinds of issues. State troopers tend to patrol the highways mostly, but also do work in remote areas of the region that might not have their own local police force. Federal troopers are typically involved in high-level investigations that span across the country while at the same time also filling in and assisting state troopers in regionally remote areas.
The first decision you need to make resides here. Once you have made that decision, you can go right ahead and start the application process to become a member of your selected police force. All of the levels of police will have their own recruitment office, typically located at the main headquarters of the police force. Once you have decided where you want to be, this is the place to go.
